DN ICEBOATS RACING ON CANANDAIGUA LAKE

DN ICEBOATS RACING ON CANANDAIGUA LAKE
The DN class is the nearly universal standard for single person iceboats.  They're cheap, fast and uncomfortable enough to make the driver feel satisfactorily macho.  The smooth expanse of the lake and the impending squall moving in from the northwest are fairly typical during winter, but getting sufficient ice has become a problem in the Finger Lakes during recent years.  Watercolor, approx. 32 x 20 in.

PINES IN LAKE EFFECT SNOW SQUALL

PINES IN LAKE EFFECT SNOW SQUALL
This early painting was based loosely on the view from our back porch, though I have taken certain liberties with the placement of the trees.  In upstate New York we often get these heavy snow squalls blowing in from Lake Ontario.  Strictly speaking, it's not truly a watercolor because I was experimenting with some Chinese white for the snow on the trees.  Oddly enough, that becomes more apparent in the photographic medium.  Watercolor and gouache, approximately 8 x 10 in., private collection.
